Country Gravy: What is it?

Country gravy also popularly known as white gravy is one of the most legendary dishes off the South. This particular recipe will take you back in time and will teleport you to your favourite childhood memories. If you have never tried it than I am sure it’s a major missing of some of the well cherished flavours of the South. This recipe will not only take you down on the memory lane but is also easy to make with satisfying results right in the comforts of your home. This particular old fashioned classical gravy is not only scrumptious but can be homemade quickly with just 5 kitchen staple ingredients available in every kitchen.

The step by step directions are mentioned below but if you are making it from scratch than these are the main ingredients that you need which are always almost available in every kitchen. The process will be much quicker if you put all the mentioned ingredients at arm's length and voila your cooking experience would definitely be much better and easier.

1. Bacon Fat or Butter

It's up to you to decide what you need to use between leftover bacon fat or butter as per according to your preferences. If you desire a rich meaty flavour than go with bacon grease otherwise traditionally butter is used.

2. Flour

All purpose flour is the second main ingredient that adds a silky and smooth texture while holding the gravy. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this ingredient is the soul of this gravy.

3. Salt and Pepper

This gravy is seasoned with only salt and freshly grounded pepper but you can add any spice that you want. Adding garlic powder can also add a rich and amazing flavour to it.

4. Milk

It is recommended to use room temperature whole milk. You can add milk as per according to the consistency you require. Skimmed milk can also be used but to have a better and much rich flavour, traditionally whole dairy milk is used.

Instructions

Step 1: Melt bacon fat or butter in a skillet over a medium flame. Add in flour, salt , pepper and garlic powder (if desired). Keep on cooking it on a medium low flame while whisking continuously otherwise lumps would form. When the roux changes its colour to light golden, becomes paste like and gives a beautiful smell than you need to follow the next step.

Step 2: Gradually add milk to the flour mixture while whisking it continuously to avoid lumps. Simmer it over medium heat.

Step 3: Cook and stir until the milk gravy is silky and has a creamy-smooth texture. Now it's time for you to decide about the consistency. If its thick as per according to your taste than keep on adding milk gradually while stirring and whisking it unless and until you get the desired result. Let it cool down a bit and TA-DA your perfect , scrumptious and delicious gravy is ready.

What is White Gravy in America

White gravy is basically the Southern adaptation of béchamel sauce. The main distinction is that this Southern classical gravy is much thicker than the béchamel sauce and it always has newly grounded black pepper that adds a distinctive and rich flavour to it.

White Gravy Vs Brown Gravy

Some people confuse white gravy with brown gravy so let me clear the confusion before sharing the main ingredients and step by step process. So what makes the difference between these two gravies from the similar family is the liquid that’s used while making it. Brown gravy is normally made with meat fat and broth, while on the other hand white gravy is made with milk most preferably whole milk..

Storing Country Gravy

It can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. When this delicious gravy has cooled down to room temperature then move it into an airtight storage container. When needed reheat it in a microwave or on a stove.

Recommendation

It is highly recommended to cook the entire gravy on a medium low flame as otherwise it would be tricky to handle and there would be a high probability of it getting burnt.

Personally I also don’t recommend freezing it as it is not a time consuming thing to make plus it is better when used fresh. But if you have limited time or have to entertain guests or have to arrange a party than this is what you need to do.

Tricks and variations

This mouth-watering versatile and multipurpose gravy goes along with a lot many different things. It not only adds flavour to a lot many dishes but also looks classical and tempting to be served to guests as well. It can be enjoyed with biscuits, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, chicken tenders, turkey, pork chops, sausages, ham, eggs, omelettes, breakfast casseroles, breakfast skillets, pizzas and can be used on pastas and macaroni’s as well or a lot many other dishes of your choice. This particular gravy which is a Southern speciality has the tendency to add a lip-smacking and satisfying flavour to any dish that it is added to, taking people to heavenly food experiences.

Conclusion

The best part about this traditional southern gravy is that it is not only easy to cook but can add flavour to a lot many other dishes. For me one of the most tempting highlights of this gravy is that it reminds me of warm and cosy evenings of my childhood and keeps the traditions alive in my heart and also in my kitchen. It is very much satisfying that by sharing this recipe I am also passing a fragment of the traditional stuff down to other people who I am sure will enjoy it as much as I do and will take them on a roller coaster ride of tastes.
