  • Prepare Apples – Remove the stems of the apples and thoroughly wash them. Place the clean apples on a sheet pan sprayed with cooking spray to allow them to dry.
  • Prepare the Sugar Mixture – In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, white food coloring, and pink gel food coloring using a wooden spoon. Cook the mixture on medium heat until it boils.
  • Use a Candy Thermometer to Monitor the Mix – When the mixture begins to boil, stick a candy thermometer on the side of the pan. Be sure that the thermometer is well in the mixture, but not touching the bottom.
  • The mixture should reach 302 degrees Fahrenheit. This may take up to 20 minutes, but the mixture does not need to be stirred in the process.
  • Remove from Heat – Once the mixture has reached 302 degrees Fahrenheit, remove it from the heat. Use a rubber spatula to stir in the vanilla extract, making sure it is fully incorporated.
  • Dip the Apples – Carefully dip the apples into the sugar mixture. Swirl them around to make sure they are fully coated, allow the excess sugar mixture to drip off. Place the apples on the sheet pan to allow them to fully dry.
  • Be certain to be careful when dipping the apples, as the sugar mixture will be hot. It is best to tilt the pan to make it easier to dip.

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 45 minutes

Yield: 12

Ingredients:

4 ½ cups granulated sugar
1 ½ cups water
¾ cups corn syrup
3 tbsp white food colouring
rainbow food colouring
12 granny smith apples
lollipop sticks or skewers
cooking spray

Steps:

  • You will be making 2 colors per batch, so just repeat these steps 3 times.
  • Place 1 ½ cups granulated sugar, ½ cup water and ¼ cup corn syrup into a medium-sized pot and stir to combine.
  • Add 1 tbsp white food coloring and several drops pink food coloring and mix well.
  • Set to medium-high heat and attach a candy thermometer. Heat to 302F.
  • In the meantime, wash the apples, remove the stems and insert lollipop sticks or skewers into the top. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Once the candy reaches 302F, dip 2 apples into the pink candy, then place on the baking sheet.
  • Add some orange food coloring to the candy, mix well, then coat 2 apples in orange candy.
  • To easily clean the pot between batches, pour out any excess candy into a silicone mold, then fill the pot with water. Bring to a boil and boil until the excess candy coating melts. Pour out the hot water, then repeat Steps 2-6, making yellow and green in one batch and blue and purple in the last batch.

How do you make candy coated apples?

Place the prepped apples on a baking sheet covered with waxed paper. Next, you’ll want to make the candy coating. Combine the sugar, water and corn syrup in a large, heavy-duty saucepan. Cook and stir the ingredients over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to boil.

Can you make candy apples with colored bakers chocolate?

If you use colored bakers chocolate, you can make them in even more colors. Candy apples can be made in just about any color; if you add white gel food coloring, the candy coating will turn opaque. They are perfect not just for Halloween, but for other themed events as well, including birthdays and weddings.

How do you color apples with food coloring?

In the first bowl, add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and the red food coloring. In the second bowl, add remaining cinnamon and the black food coloring. Stir each mixture until the color is well combined. Dip the prepared apples into the candy mixtures until fully coated, then place on prepared baking sheet.

How long does it take to boil apples to make candy?

Insert candy thermometer and continue to boil until temperature reaches between 300° and 310°, about 15 to 20 minutes. Immediately remove from heat. Working quickly and carefully—coating will be extremely hot—coat apples in candy mixture and transfer to prepared baking sheet.
