Having just read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society for my book club, I had to find a way to make a potato peel pie for meeting. After some research, it seems this potato peel pie is as fictional as the characters in the book so I found a recipe online and tweaked it slightly and came up with the following. If possible, it is best to serve hot from the oven. Happy reading and eating!

2 cups raw, grated potato skins (I added some of the white part to keep the texture somewhat tender), use mashed potatoes for filling
1/3 cup grated onion
1 egg, beaten
3 Tbs flour
beetroot
sour cream (optional)
chives (optional)
butter (optional)
garlic (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Butter a small pie plate. Mix grated potato peels with egg, onion and flour. Press the mixture into the pie plate and up the sides to form a crust.
  • Bake crust for 20-25 minutes. While the crust is baking, cook potatoes, drain and mash. You can add your favorite mashed potato flavorings here i.e. garlic, onion, milk, butter, salt, etc.
  • Fill crust with mashed potatoes and sprinkle with beetroot. Bake in oven at lower temperature of 375 for 10 minutes or until browned.

Where is the Original Potato Peel Pie Recipe?

There is no definitive answer to this question as there are several versions of the original potato peel pie recipe. The most popular version is likely the one that was published in The Boston Cooking School Cookbook in 1896. This recipe calls for boiled, mashed potatoes to be layered between two unbaked pie crusts. The ingredients are then topped with a mixture of butter, sugar, and milk. The dish is baked until the crust is golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.

Note tips:

When it comes to potato peel pie, there is no one correct way to make it. However, there are a few things that you can do to make the pie taste better and be easier to make.

  1. Use a thicker potato layer. This will make the pie more filling and less likely to fall apart.
  2. Make sure to use a pie crust that is not too thin. This will make the pie crust more sturdy and prevent it from falling apart.
  3. Use a good amount of butter in the crust and in the filling to make it taste great.

Tips for Making Delicious Potato Peel Pie:

  • Start with a recipe that you’re familiar with and make sure to follow the instructions carefully.
  • Always use a good quality pie crust and make sure to follow the recipe instructions carefully.
  • Add some spices to the recipe to give it a little extra flavor.
  • Be sure to refrigerate the pie before serving to ensure that it is fresh and delicious.

How to store with Potato Peel Pie:

Making sure to store it in an AIR-TIGHT container. This means placing the pie in a plastic or metal container that is tightly sealed. Then make sure to store the pie in a cool, dry location. Finally, make sure to store the pie in its original packaging.

What serves with Potato Peel Pie:

  • Green salad is one option simple The acidity of the dressing will cut through the richness of the pie.
  • Roasted vegetables are also a great option
  • Something like Brussels sprouts or roasted sweet potatoes would be a great complement to the savory flavors in the pie.
  • Lastly, no meal is complete without a little something sweet.
  • A slice of Pie à la Mode would be the perfect way to finish off this dish.

Conclusion:

The potato peel pie is a delicious and easy-to-make dish. You are also replacing potato with sweet potato to make skin pie.
